OUR HISTORY

The West Ashley Outboard Motor Club (WAOMC) was officially chartered in 1957. It is the oldest boat club of its kind in the Charleston, South Carolina area and has been the model and inspiration for others in the area. Several men, led by the late Charles Andrews, organized a group of boaters for the establishment of a safe location for launching and retrieving powerboats.

The original WAOMC location was Wappoo Cut Landing which divides Charleston and James Island. After Charleston County took over the site, the club moved to Buzzard’s Roost (now Saint John’s Marina) on the Stono River. The club moved to its current location on Potato Shed Creek off the Stono River, over thirty-five years ago.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the West Ashley Outboard Motor Club is to promote boating safety, education and knowledge for the benefit of all who enjoy our waters. We strive to provide a safe and family focused atmosphere for our members. Each prospective member must pass a safety inspection by the Coast Guard before joining. We are especially proud of our philanthropic contributions to the Charleston, South Carolina community at large.
